Questions

Can I see the northern lights tonight?

Yes, as far south as Calgary. NOAA's forecast peaks at Kp 3.67 in the next 24 hours, for the 3 hours from 21:00 UTC. That pushes the aurora's southern edge to about magnetic latitude 59°, visible low in the north from about 55°. Pick your city or state for a local verdict; you also need clear skies to the north.

What Kp do I need to see the northern lights?

It depends on your magnetic latitude. Alaska and northern Canada see aurora at Kp 1 to 3; Scotland, Minnesota and the US–Canada border at about Kp 4 to 5; London, New York and Chicago need Kp 6 to 8. The table below lists the Kp for each band.

How accurate is the aurora forecast?

The Kp forecast for tonight is a reasonable guide; two or three days out it is rough, because the speed and orientation of a solar storm's magnetic field are only measured about an hour before it reaches Earth. The OVATION map is a 30 to 90 minute nowcast based on those live measurements.

Is it solar maximum?

The Sun's 11-year cycle peaked around 2024 to 2025. Big geomagnetic storms stay common for a few years after the peak, so strong aurora nights are still likely through 2026 and 2027.

Data: NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (planetary K-index forecast, 3-day forecast, 27-day outlook, OVATION aurora model). Magnetic latitudes: AACGM-v2. Darkness and Moon computed with Skyfield and JPL DE440. We do not forecast clouds: you need a clear view to the north. How the verdict is made.
