The count is every Starlink payload in the public satellite catalog that has no re-entry date: 11,140. CelesTrak's current orbit file for the group holds 11,110 element sets (GP, 7 October 2026), which agrees within 30.
"In orbit" is not the same as "working". The catalog marks 10,838 as operational and 300 as partially operational; the rest of the difference are satellites still raising their orbits, being lowered for disposal or out of service. SpaceX launched 2,167 so far in 2026 across 82 launches, and 423 came down in the same period.
